The Maze of the GMAT Prep; the Proverbial Slip between the Cup and the Lip (Discussion)

Very often, students lament that – “I was flabbergasted at the exam hall and came out after clicking some damn choices. At the test place, GMAT was totally different from what we had learnt. ” Is it really true or is it just a psychological cracking under pressure?

According to me, it is no more than caving under intense tension. The same students who scored less than 500 in the maiden attempt have been able to comfortably cross 600, when they took the exam without even further serious practice. How come?

I will rather list the following exhaustive but not exclusive hints for doing well in the GMAT.

General

1. Never be intimidated by the GMAT. Develop the “KICK THE GMAT” attitude. Heavens will not fall, if you went low on GMAT score. There is always the next month to re-write it. I do not mean that you can take GMAT casually; only thing is that you have to take the upper hand before GMAT can sap you.

2. . GMAT is an endurance test indeed. Especially those who are not good at computer typing will be very tiresome at the end of the AWA session and the subsequent nerve racking Quants and verbals will then be like climbing the Himalayas. If required, tone down the stress on the AWA; after all, the scored sections are relatively more important. Save that valuable energy for the ensuing quants and verbals sessions.

3.Take good rest the day before the test, so that you do not feel drowsy during the exam. Take vitamins pills, if you want, for the day to boost up you nerves and muscles.

Preparation:

1. GMAT is no joke. Judicious preparation is the key to success. Never imagine GMAT is self learnable. May be a few can do it. But to most others, self- coaching with the help of books is sheer Quixotism. Join some institute, which has the best of the facilities and faculties in the town. Faculty’s contribution is a prime factor in GMAT; so ask previous students of the institute where you intend to take up coaching about the infrastructure, course materials, and above all the faculty’s worth. The old students are the best guides to tell you.

2. Please realize that most of the preparation materials available in the market are rather medium level tools, which do not normally push the student beyond 650 at best, their on line learning systems are no match to the real GMAT. If you are scoring yourself on any of those company based on line tests (I do not thing that there is a true, fully computer adaptive online GMAT test with any of these online learning systems, in which questions change depending upon the response)

3. Next, in the verbal, your thoroughness with the prepaartion of the Sentence Correction can go a long way in deciding your higher scoring. With nearly five to six questions in the early 10 to 12 questions, they may virtually make or break your grade in the computer adaptive GMAT. Please do not take me wrong that the performance in the other two modules do not count

Your preparation must include a high number of tough question materials and the more tough they are, the higher the score, it is likely to be. I think, this is the single factor that makes the difference between the performers and the out – performers. Beg, borrow, steal, but be sure to gather enough of 750 plus materials.

4. Your performance in the Quants sections should be as close to 400, if you want to score 750 plus… The god thing about this is that, it is possible to score so highly in the Quants, while Verbal is too tricky an affair to go above 350(I mean for most students). So why miss the chance?

5.When it comes to mock testing the GMAT, there is no substitute to the GMAC-generated GMATPrep. After all, who knows GMAT better than the GMAC, the makers of the GMAT?

These are my personal opinions drawn from empirical experience. May be there are better ways and means of reaching the coveted 700 plus. Why can’t somebody, who knows them, put them down here for the benefit of all.

So far so much. Good Luck.
