    Please rate my argument …...

The following appeared as part of a recommendation by one of the directors of the Beta Company.

“The Alpha Company has just reduced its workforce by laying off fifteen percent of its employees in all divisions and at all levels, and it is encouraging early retirement for other employees. As you know, the Beta Company manufactures some products similar to Alpha’s, but our profits have fallen over the last few years. To improve Beta’s competitive position, we should try to hire a significant number of Alpha’s former workers, since these experienced workers can provide valuable information about Alpha’s successful methods, will require little training, and will be particularly motivated to compete against Alpha.”

    Discuss how well reasoned… etc.

The director of Beta Company recommends to hire the laid off employees of its competitor, “The Alpha Company”. In support of his claim, the director argues that former Alpha workers are experienced, hence can provide valuable information about Alpha’s successful methods, will require little training, and will be particularly motivated to compete against Alpha. Further the director advocates that the hiring strategy will work in favor of Beta to improve its competitive position. The director’s line of reasoning is flawed for following reasons.

Firstly, the director assumes that the former employees would be valuable asset to Beta, for their immense experience with Alpha that manufactures “some” similar products as Beta. However, the director never mentions the quality of experience of the prospective fired employees of Alpha. Perhaps the employees might have experience in dealing with products that Beta is not competing for. Also, it could turn out that Alpha company adopts automatic and sophisticated methods of production such as CNC machines, robots etc, while Beta is new industry which cannot afford such automation presently. Thus skill sets of former Alpha employees would be different than those required in Beta Company; hence the directors claim that employees will require little training is ill-founded.

Secondly, the director assumes that business methods adopted by Alpha Company were successful. But the argument doesn’t provide any concrete evidence in this respect. Common sense suggests that perhaps Alpha is in financial crisis and is downsizing its labor force as an immediate step to avoid bankruptcy. Hence, director’s claim that information about Alpha’s operating methods from the sacked employees would benefit Beta falls apart.

Finally, the director assumes that the sacked employees of Alpha Company are worth to be hired by Beta Company. However, observations suggest that during downsizing the employees first to be fired are those who lack motivation, who have obsolete skills and who are not dynamic target achievers. Perhaps such employees would be of little help to Beta Company that boasts to be more competitive.

In sum, as it stands, the director’s proposal is not compelling. To make it more convincing the director should hire employees with relevant experience; provide data regarding Alpha Company’s success track and prospective former employees of Alpha suits to culture and dreams of Beta Company.

    hi adit,

    i have the following feedback:

    1. use shorter sentences – in longer sentences, there is a high chance that the reader will miss the point of the essay

    2. use bullets/numbers to build up points

    3. your language is good – i am sure this will be an asset for you in the actual GMAT AWA

    4. the logic is fine – i’m sure you won’t lose marks on this end

btw, how do you rate your own essay? where do you think you could have done better?

Hey Plz rate my Issue essay

Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the opinion stated above. Support your views with reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations or reading.

Education plays a very important role in one’s life. Schooling and higher educations changes one’s personality. As we grow older what matters most is our experience. Same with employees, applying for the positions such as managers, VP depends not only on educational credentials but also on one’s previous experiences.

Education is the key factor in evaluating person’s basic knowledge. Education plays important where you stand. Especially at higher levels. If a employee belong to higher level then the hiring team would expect you to have higher degrees with experience which will help company to progress. If a employee just graduated or a fresher then education also plays an important role but fresher jobs are more of basic and all depends on how you impress your mangers.

People with higher level of education are tend to be more sincere towards their work and society as compare to people who are not highly educated. There is a huge difference between people with higher education as compare to people who are freshers.

It is not always education which plays an important role but experience also plays an important role. Bill Gates, CEO of Microsoft, who knew Harvard drop out would turn up so big.It also depends on how you use an opportunity that comes your way. There are so many other famous people who are just high school graduates or college drop-out who have worked hard in their jobs and now owns the same company.

In the end, I would like to conclude by saying Formal educational credentials does play an important depending on you level of job. Higher the level, higher the education. But some time lower level job also require good education like you won’t be hired as a physical trainer until you are fully qualified.
