CAT or GMAT? (Discussion)

Hi all,

My aspiration for MBA started with an Intereset in GMAT.I came to know that it involves investment around 15-20 lakh and that I will have to live abroad for long term which I don’t intend to do.Then there were some insecurities issues looking at recent attacks on indian students abroad.

Well I am not bothered from the attacks but you know it’s family that gets concerned. Also I have no plans of living in abroad for tool long.So these all thoughts are preventing from preparing for GMAT.

I am in a dilemma which is driving me crazy and stopping me to do anything.

I will try to describe my situation.

I have 3+ years of work expereince and am currently working in a S/w company. I wish to do MBA from a decent college whether from india or abraod(I am not getting strong reasons) doesn’t matters me.

I don’t have willingness to live abroad for long term. I want to earn and live decently in india only. So,this thought is preventing me from doing GMAT preperation.

I wish to join a coaching soon for kick-starting my preperation but am still undecided on whether I should go for GMAT coaching or CAT coaching.

If I join CAT coaching I don’t think I am good enough to aim for IIM’s or ISB so I would target for xlri, fms, spjain, symbiosys.

Am I going to miss something big and good due to not doing GMAT?or Is there any other advantage of GMAT which I will miss due to not taking it.

Your suggestions and help in this regard would be really helpful.

Thanks, Deepak.

my understanding is having a gmat will also gets you qualified for institutions asking for CAT’s . Where as if you take CAT’s you are limited to those universities that accept those scores.

Want to study abroad or in india is a whole different story, if you are career focused and think about the long range in your life, you should see which one works out, if you study in IIM or ISB it is equally good from Indian Context as studying abroad in columbia etc

If you are planning to study abroad, and not planning to work there, then you should consider 2 factors, one the fee you are spending, including the living expense. second when you go back to india to work , will you be paid well to recover from that debt and how long will it take. And the impact that does on your normal life.

What happens in most cases is students go abroad with the intention of returning after studies, but abroad they are usually paid well for MBA’s from good schools that most of them stay there and very rarely any plans to return even after paying the debt. But if you can do that, i.e study, work for some years gain MNC experience , study the work style which you can only get by working abroad, go back to india and work in MNC or start a business.

Again there is this 3rd area where you can focus, where some of the universities do MBA course tie up with Indian universities, so partially you are in india and partially abroad.Fee wise this will be cheaper and you can look more into. please search internet to see which universities does this.

I know in canada there is Schulich School of Business of York University where they have India MBA program

    Hope you find this helpful

    Hi,

Definitely this is a different case to me. If you are not willing to work abroad, then the expenditures that you incur for your MBA abroad my not be compensated quick enough by doing a job back here in India. So, if you are concerned about the expenditures of doing MBA abroad then you must look out for an MBA in India rather than abroad.

I agree that there are top B-Schools in India like IIMs, XLRI, FMS etc; but studying in a top B-School abroad is definitely a different experience altogether. If your academic profile is good, with an experience of 3+ yrs you have definite chances to get into the decent B-Schools both in India and abroad.
