Hi, I’m very new to GMAT and have been taking some sample tests to see where I stand now. I’m managing to get about 75% correct, without any preparation yet. How good or bad is this?
I’m aiming to get 720+ as I want to apply to an Ivy League college but I’m also working full time so need your advice on how time I should take to prepare? I’m getting a slot in 6 weeks but not sure if that’ll be too soon.
Also, for the Quant / Maths section, are we allowed to use calculators?
Thanks, Tara

75% without any preparation is pretty good. If you study hard enough your score should improve significantly, so getting a 90% is not impossible. If you’re working full-time though and have little time to study, 6 weeks may be a bit too early.
The best advice I can give you is to study as much as you can, until you can get a score that reflects what you wish to get on the actual GMAT. You should use all the LearnHub resources, including the new Question Bank, as well as official GMAT resources from GMAC which include access to practice software similar to the one you’ll actually be using on the test. While studying, focus on those areas that you are weaker in to make sure you’re covered well on all bases.
For the quantitative section a calculator is not allowed. Therefore, you should practice arithmetic operations without calculators, including fraction operations, long division, etc.

Thanks so much for your advice! My problem is that I’ve woken up to GMAT pretty late in the year for this and am worried that I will only be able to catch Round 2 of admissions for all good colleges… does it make sense to apply in round 2 or should i just drop this year and apply next year in Round 1?
Please advise, many thanks!

Personally, I think that you should probably wait on that decision until after you have your GMAT score, because there is a chance that if something goes wrong the day of the test and you don’t get a very high score, you’ll have to retake the GMAT, and shouldn’t apply before you get the high score you deserve.
If you do get a good score and have already taken the time to prepare a good application package (which can take quite a while) , there is no reason to skip round 2 and wait for next year. It’s probably best to apply as early as you can, in case you don’t get accepted to your dream school in the first try and want to reapply the year after.
Of course, that’s just my personal opinion, and you should take into account your personal situation and preferences when applying to anything.

I believe that you can take the GMAT without any experience, it’s not a requirement for taking the test. However, since you are likely to need experience to use your GMAT score and apply to an MBA program, it may be better to wait and gain some experience just to make sure you can apply with a recent score.
It’s really up to you, GMAT scores are valid up to 5 years (although some programs want scores no older than 2 years), so you don’t have to wait long. The GMAT doesn’t test any business related topics, so experience shouldn’t affect your score much.

According to the information I found, your 2-year work experience is important in order to be admitted. The I.S.B. is looking for candidates with leadership abilities and communication skills, so if you displayed these skills at your job it will be beneficial.
There is no cut-off for low GMAT scores and other aspects of your profile can help make up for it. The GMAT range appears to be between 600 and 780, so if you’re in that range you’re ok. The higher you are, of course, the better are your chances of getting in.
My advice would be to focus on the admission essays, since they can help project the kind of leadership and communication that I.S.B. is looking for and which can’t be determined using the GMAT score.

the complete selection criteria of ISB, Hyderabad can be found at its official web site which gives weightage in selection to CAT/GMAT score (about 20% weightage), academic scores, interview, GD, GK, essay writing etc. I think the Minimum acceptable GMAT score is 550. However, u may please check all these details on their web site.

Thanks for the contribution rkmittal! You’re right, the best source to find information about any school would be the school’s website. They always contain all the info you need about admissions and official criteria. I believe this website would direct you to the ISB admissions page.
Sometimes it can also help to ask people who have actual experience in the matter, like those who were actually accepted to the I.S.B. in the past. Not being an Indian myself, I don’t have that type of experience of course, but if anyone here does know something about it we’d appreciate your comments.

From July’08 onwards, I started sectional prac. tests & my accuracies are: QA 80-85% & VA: 60-70 (RC, CR weak)..Today I’ve taken Kaplan Premier Program’s PBT & scored 640. Your comments & guidance on way forward for me, pl.

Guys, Meroyal., everyone…..some important points to take care of for all those who r taking gmat in future….
I took the GMAT yesterday (4th september 08)....get this straight inside your head….. Maths has become much much more tougher…by tougher I mean lengthier… i am sure many who took the paper even a month back will disagree…all my friends averaged 50-51 in the maths section then. in the last ten days 11 of us took the test..all of us iitians or dceites….we averaged 49-50…i hope u understand the difference between a 49 and a 50…its huge…can make a difference of 10-20 points overall.
Based on my experience, Maths now is tougher than the maths in kaplan tests…only maths….I scored 51 in maths in all the tests i took…5 kaplan, 4 princeton, 2 official guide tests….in the test i was really screwed…scored a 48. i don’t know if this is an indication towards the future level of quant…but i am just sharing my experience.
Secondly, RC in the actual test is a piece of cake….very very easy..Kaplan RCs are 10 times tougher…princeton RCs are 5 times tougher. Sentence correction…tricky…but remember….there ar only two choices that are confusing…rest three are just crap…that should make u feel better…
Critical reasoning…it is a mix…..depends on where u r in the test (remember its a adaptive test)...can be very tough if u r doing well…but then that should be taken as a good sign.
Overall, verbal is not very tough….concentrate and u will do well…trust me my verbal was pathetic when I started Last tip…don’t study too much….afdter two-thre months u reach a peak then decline….so no point slogging.
Meroyal, 640 in the kaplan test i.e. if you average 630-650 in the five kaptests (one in the book, four in the cd; u can tk the online test as well)......u will score 730-780 in GMAT…just take care of maths separately…dont take it lightly…do all the questions in the book…yes all… with time record. let me know of any queries…. By the way my stats…Quant 48, Verbal 49…Overall 780.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience sid_dce17! I’m sure many people will find it helpful. Congratulations for getting a great overall score.
I personally find it odd that the math section became a lot tougher all of a sudden, though while this would affect your mark it shouldn’t affect the percentile standing since everybody gets the same test and scores are measured objectively across both all takers from this seating as well as other seatings and previous years, I believe. I’m not sure whether the harder math section is just a coincidence or a trend that will last for long, I guess that when the new edition of the GMAC Official Guide comes out we’ll know for sure.
However, if anybody’s going to take the test soon, it maybe worth it to prepare for a harder math section. Thanks for the input!

olahav, I totally agree with ur confusion….i wrote to make sure that someone shouldn’t screw his test ‘cause he didn’t study for maths….specially engineers because the first comment u get when u start preparing is maths is a piece of cake….in my test there were atleast 3 questions that had wrong options….trust me all of them long ones…they may be experimental questions but they do waste a significant amount of time..

Hi Lahav,
I have around 4 years of exp in IT service company and i took GMAT recently (30th Dec 2008) and scored 580 Q42 ad 26V.I applied for GLIMS but couldnt convince them and dint get a call for GD/PI.I dint apply for any other institute bcoz of 2 reasons 1)i dint plan properly and 2) i felt my score is very less and i am confident of scoring higher than this next time. Now I need your help in the following. How should one go in selecting the institutes for doing MBA.My preference are first i would like to look in India for a 1 year MBA and then abroad for 1 year MBA. Could you pls help me out in shortlisting few good institutes abroad which offer 1 year MBA and have good placement records and also not very costly.I know this is a blunt question but kindly help me out. Also i would like to know wat will be the correct time to start the application process and giving another shot at GMAT. Regards, Karthik
