The Analytical Writing Assessment section (2 essays, one about responding to an argument and another one which is a critique of an argument) is scored between 0-6 in half points. The final score on the section will be the average of the 2 assessments. The score is computed and reported separately from the rest of the GMAT test.
The report you will receive after you write the test will include the verbal section score, the quantitative section, the total score which is made up of verbal and quantitative, and a separate writing section score.
This does not mean the essays are not important, they are just calculated separately from the rest. To find out how much you need to score on that section to get into a program in a certain school, you should consult the requirements for that particular school.

For a Masters in Software studies you won’t need the GMAT. You be required to take the TOEFL if you’ve been studying in a non-English institute. As well, you may need to take the GRE, the Graduate Record Examination which is sometimes used for graduate program admissions in the US and Canada. You can find out more about these by clicking on the links and going through the introductory lessons.
