If you’re looking to improve your vocabulary, here’s something that can help you out!

We’ll be posting a new vocabulary word in this thread daily, and if you keep up you can gain some great words that will enrich your reading and writing and will allow you to improve your GMAT score.

Please feel free to contribute any hard vocabulary words you know.

Word 1:
Ostracize (v)- to exclude someone from society or a group, or to banish somebody unpopular from your city in ancient Greece.

    Word 2:
    Desuetude (n)- a state of disuse. For example, my cellular phone fell into desuetude ever since I got a Blackberry.

    Word 3:
    Hearsay (n)- information received from people which can’t be verified with proper evidence, like a rumour. For example: according to hearsay, Michael is cheating on his girlfriend.

    Word 4:
    Tinny (adj)- having a displeasing, thin, metallic sound/taste. Can also mean made of thin or poor quality metal. For example- this iron-enriched vitamins are tinny, are you sure the doctor prescribed them? Another example- your car is so tinny, it’s no wonder it got completely destroyed in the crash.

    Word 5:
    Cutaneous (Adj)- Relating to or affecting the skin. For example- After trying to swim along the shoreline this weekend, the sharp rocks gave me a cutaneous gash on my left foot. Another example- That sunburn could be described as a cutaneous pigment (adjective basically means to say pigment of the skin).

    Word 6:
    Liminal (Adj)- Referring to the transitional or initial stage of a process. It can also mean to occupy a position at, or on both sides of a boundary or threshold. For example- The report card marks were still in a liminal state due to the teacher’s injury. Another example- We may have a liminality, the basketball game has been delayed.

    Word 7:
    Zelig (noun) – A person who is able to change their appearance, behaviour, or attitudes, so as to be comfortable in any situation. Fact: This term comes forth from Woody Allen’s film named the same, made in 1983. Example- Batman is such a zelig, one moment he’s a millionaire, the next, a masked stranger, being the hero Gotham needs him to be.

    Word 8: (The letter “Z” is inspiring me to be over-ambitious :P)
    Zeitgeist (noun)- Originally a German word derived from Zeit meaning time and Geist meaning spirit. This word in definition means the defining spirit or mood of a specific period in history as demonstrated through the ideas and beliefs of the time. An example- The old photograph of a teenage flapper captured the zeitgeist, or essence of the Roaring Twenties.

    Word 9:
    Ostentatious (adj) Characterized by pretentious or showy display; designed to impress. Example- Heather decided on a simple dress to wear to the party; it was classic and glamorous without being ostentatious.

    Word 10:
    Heathen (n)- a pagan person who doesn’t follow an Abrahamic religion, or simply an uncivilized person. Example: the heathen was a barbaric fool who gave a bad reputation to the entire community.

    Heathen also come as an adjective- you could say a heathen, or a heathen person. In this context, heathen is an adjective meaning uncivilized or uncultured.

    Foresight (n)- the ability to prepare for or foresee the future. Example: Max had the foresight to wear a coat today, which turned out to be a good idea because it started raining during the afternoon.
