Critical Reasoning Rev. Hayes says that an action is right if it benefits one or more other people and an action is wrong if it harms anyone. Rev. Hayes says the action is wrong if the harm could have been seen with reasonable thought or whether or not harm was intended to anyone. Which one of the following most clearly conforms to the principle cited above? (A) Frank wrote a proposal attempting to cause trouble between Linda and Jane; this action was morally bad, even though, in fact, it had an opposite effect than the one intended. (B) Giving a homeless man a ride to a local shelter, Fred was in a serious car accident that was not his fault. The homeless man, injured in the accident, received a settlement from the other driver's insurance company. The settlement allowed him to get an apartment for him and his family; thus showing that a right action can have both bad and good consequences. (C) Giving a homeless man a ride to a local shelter, George was in a serious car accident that was his fault. The homeless man, injured in the accident, received a settlement from George's insurance company. The settlement allowed him to get an apartment for him and his family; thus showing that a right action can have both bad and good consequences. (D) Linda agreed to watch her friend's cat for two weeks at her home. Everything went fine for 10 days. Then, on the next day, when Linda opened the window and sat down to watch television, the cat fell out of the window and was injured. She took the cat to a local vet, paid the bill, and the cat was almost recovered by the time Linda's friend returned. Even though she intended no harm, Linda's action was wrong. (E) Mary, a trained social worker, was asked by a homeless man for food. She walked with the man to the local shelter that runs a soup kitchen. There, the man choked while eating lunch and died. Thus, Mary performed a wrong action. |

So,folks here are the correct answers Critical Reasoning The correct answer is D. The argument claims that an action is right only if it meets both the following criteria: (1) It benefits another person. (2) It is performed with that intent. The argument also claims that an action that harms another person is wrong if it meets either one of the following criteria: (1) The harm was intended. (2) Reasonable thought would show that the action was likely to cause harm. In choice (D), Linda should have realized that if she was watching television and the window was open, the cat might jump out. This satisfies the second criteria for a wrong action. Reasonable |

Problem Solving The correct answer is A. Since the money is to be divided in the ratio of 5 : 3 and also we are going to calculate one-twelfths of that assume the total amount to be divisible by 8 (5+3) as well as 12. Let us take it as Rs.24. So as per the ratio 5:3, A should get Rs 15 and B should Rs. 9. Instead A received one-twelfth extra i.e. Rs. 2 extra. Thus A received Rs. 17 and B received the remaining Rs.7. Hence the required ratio = 17 : 7 Hence, option (A). Click here for the next week's Punch |
