    (B) which requires an enormous investment of time and money, does not guarantee success since there is so much competition.

    Sry I dont really have an explaination….it just sounds right n obvious…..

    Math prob : (A)14

    From 1st equation, b=[7-(a2)]/2

    a2>0 => 7-(a2) < 7 =>b < 3.5 =>b2 < 12.25

    Similarly, a2 < 5.44

    c2 < 3.06

    Adding, a2 + b2 + c^2 < 20.75

    From the options, answer should be (A)

    Your way is good, the first I don’t find it out. I solve in this way:

    You can see easily is that C^2 + 6a = 14 -> a< – 3 (or =) b ^ 2 + 4c= 7 -> c < – 2 (or =) a ^ 2 + 2b = 7—> b > 0

    -> if a = -3 -> c = 2 -> b = 1 —> a ^ 2+B ^ 2+C ^ 2 = 14 -> A

    Then, I think your way is better, thank you!

    (B) which requires an enormous investment of time and money, does not guarantee success since there is so much competition.

    It is subject-verb agreement – ‘A career’ is a singular subject and hence takes V5 (does) form of the verb.

    well although i initially suggested an inequality based solution, i wud rather suggest addding the equations and making squares from the expression to get

    (a+3)2 + (b+1)2 + (c+2)^2 = 0

    this is a fool proof way….although the inequality method saves time, any modification in the question or the options provided wud put u in a fix… :)

    For Sentence correction there was earlier ambiguity between B and D but D gets removed due to ambiguity of `` it `´ whether it is medical carrer or profession..

    So definetely B…

    sentence correction

    it’s B. medical profession it takes does form .

    math its A- 14. b from answer choices we can guess that a,b,c are less than 7. and from b2+4c=-7 & c2+6a=-14 &from a2+2b=7 ….its obvious to think ..a, b & c…..are -ve no.s. and less than 7 .according to answers. therefore a=-3, b=-1, c=-2 and a62+b2+c^2=9+1+4=14.

    As far the verbal question, it will be very tempting to choose the answer B because, the subject career and verb “does not” seem to fit in perfectly well. But sorry friends, it has a fatal error.

    What does the relative pronoun “which” stand for in Choice “B” – medical profession- Doesn’t it? Because, a relative pronoun just has to hang on to the noun before. But it is not the medical profession , but “a career” in medical profession that requires an enormous investment blah blah. Therefore the relative pronoun is dislocated here.

    Choice D on the other hand uses a conjunction to remove this anomaly and uses the pronoun “it” to clearly refer to the subject of the sentence i.e a career. Hence that is the right answer.

    For those who may doubt whether the relative pronouns such as “who, that, which” etc, have to necessarily refer to the noun just in front, my answer is yes except in some cases, of which this punch is not one.

    Point No 2. The use of “since there is so much competition” in “B” – The use of subordinate conjunction “since ” to connect the dependent clause is not as effective an expression as the use of “because there is so much competition” wherein a clear cause and effect relationship between possible failure and competition can be seen.

    There are other ways of writing this sentence correctly

    1. A career in the medical profession, one that requires an enormous investment of time and money, does not guarantee success as there is so much competition.

    2. A career in the medical profession, requiring an enormous investment of time and money, does not guarantee success as there is so much competition.

    A tricky question though.
