We've gone over the basics in the first Reading Comprehension lesson, now let's go into the nitty gritty, how to approach these questions piece by piece.
What you need to know about the questions is that they ask for specifics. To extremely difficult to skim and find the answers you need. It is important to read the questions before hand and pick out the information you need.
The following strategy not only saves you time, but also makes sure you get the right answer bang-on. There are two types of questions to be aware of:
| General Questions: | Specific Questions: |
| Understanding the main idea, understanding the structure. | Remembering where information is located, picking out specifics. |
Not only is it the key to understanding the whole paragraph, but it can help you get a sense of the main idea in which it is implying. But if you can't figure out the main idea just from the first sentence, you should continue to read carefully until you do so you don't miss anything.

Words that show a disconnect, or a change in meaning:
- On the other hand
- However
- But
- Yet
- Despite
- Nevertheless
- Although
- Except
- Unless
Words that show a continuation of thought:
- In Addition
- By the same token
- Likewise
- Similarly
- This implies..
- Thus implies..
It's a good idea to ask yourself questions to make sure you understand the content. When asked about a specific line as a reference, it is important to read the sentences framing this idea. This not only gives you a bigger picture but may change the information they're asking you to comprehend.
When it comes to lead words which are phrased using exact words or phrases from the text, it can help to use this to your advantage. To be able to pick out the phrase in the passage, you can then fish out what you need and that's all!
When reading inferences, mostly, answers are subtle not outrightly stated. Keep this in mind when it becomes hard to come to a clear answer. Don't go too much above what the text explains. If your answer takes too many steps to get through without the text's help you may be going too far.
